Voith IPS Internal Gear Hydraulic Pump is used in hydraulic systems where the speed of the pump determines the pressure and volume flow. The conventional system with a constant pump speed works by throttling valves. However, an IPS system uses variable motor speed based on the actual hydraulic demand of the machine. The operation of the pump is via the use of a pinion shaft that turns inside the internal gear. The space that opens up when the gears move away from each other at the suction side gets filled by the hydraulic oil. The gears rotate the oil until it moves to the pressure outlet side.
Radial and axial compensating systems for sealing gaps are used in Voith to minimize internal clearance. Plates are used for sealing axial clearance of the pressure chamber, and internal design provides minimization of volume losses. Thus, Voith pump is capable of maintaining its efficiency within a wide range of operating conditions. For the IPS range, frame sizes 3 to 7 are used with officially declared displacements 3.6-251.7 cm³/revolution. Depending on the specific model, continuous pressure is 330 bar, maximum pressure is 345 bar, and maximum speed is 3,600 rpm.
One of the key features of the IPS is that it allows the process of pressure holding at very low speeds of rotation. After the proper filling and ventilation of the pump, it is also capable of increasing pressure from zero. However, when applying this feature, the designer should take into account the pump’s temperature, the viscosity of the fluid, the conditions of pumping, and the cycle of operation. The pump is capable of performing both clockwise and counterclockwise movements. It also performs dynamic reversing in order to decrease the pressure spikes or decompress the hydraulic circuit.
